- Use attachment within design limits and in accordance with workplace procedures
- Operatebackhoe/loader in linewith establishedrequirements
- Control speed in accordance with site limits, road conditions, and load weight
- Steer smoothly and avoid excessive manoeuvring, particularly on slopes and uneven ground.
- Activate or monitor safety features, including retarders, differential locks and automatic traction control, where fitted and appropriate to site and ground conditions
- Maintain safe distances and adjust for visibility and surface conditions
- Respond appropriately to backhoe/loader’s indications, alarms and fault codes
- Remain aware of surroundings, assess situations, and respond appropriately to changing environmental, surface, or operational conditions
- Maintain communication with site personnel to remain aware of site activity and avoid collisions or traffic conflicts
- Operate equipment using techniques that maintain control and stability
- Maintain a safe distance in accordance with state or territory requirements from overhead and underground services
- Identify and operate within the equipment’s operating limitations, as per manufacturer’s specifications
- Minimise environmental impact as per site requirements
- Lift/Load, secure, carry and place materials to complete work activity
- Position machine on stable ground a safe distance from hazards or restricted zones
- Check and verify that loads do not exceed the machine’s Safe Working Load (SWL) or other manufacturer-specified operating limits
- Use attachments rated for the load and task
- Operate at a speed that suits site conditions
- Load/lift, secure, carry and place material as required, maintaining communication with others
- Use spreading and levelling techniques
- Plan and sequence spreading and levelling tasks based on ground conditions and site specifications.
- Use machine controls to achieve a uniform grade or level surface within required tolerances.
- Verify level using appropriate tools and make corrections as required
- Finalise levelling
- Make accurate initial passes by controlling depth, attachment angle, and alignment with site reference points or levels.
- Park up, shutdown and secure the backhoe/loader
- Secure any attachments before relocation
- Relocate backhoe/loader safely to designated area according to site requirements
- Park on level, stable ground, where possible
- Remove, clean and store attachments in designated location in line with workplace procedures
- Lower all raised equipment, neutralise controls and shut down engine
- Engage park braking systems and/or disengage hydraulic controls
- Complete post-operation inspection and report faults as required according to site instructions.
- Conduct housekeeping activities
- Complete post-operational checks and record/report faults or defects in line with workplace requirements
- Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials per site requirements
- Clean or arrange for the backhoe/loader to be cleaned
- Secure tools and attachments

Performance Evidence
- The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. The candidate must demonstrate completion of loader/backhoe operations that safely, effectively and efficiently follows workplace procedures to carry out work activity on at least two occasions, and include:
- conducting prestart checks prior to commencing operations and shutdown procedures on completion of operations
- driving and operating the equipment, and adjusting techniques to suit site conditions
- completion of operations to specification using at least two different material types (i.e. one different material type per occasion) including:
- mixing materials
- stripping/spreading materials
- trench excavation
- backfilling
- lifting and carry materials
- loading dump trucks, wagons, hoppers or chutes
- cutting/boxing
- selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing at least two attachments (i.e. one attachment per occasion), which must be certified and approved in line with workplace procedures and could include, but are not limited to, the following:
- extending devices
- tilt bucket

- In the course of the above work the candidate must also:

• monitor and manage equipment performance using indicators and alarms
Apply levelling techniques
- working within SWL
- select and use the required tools and equipment
- change machine attachments where required
- enter and exit the machine using three point of contact technique
- use a range of communication techniques and equipment essential to the safe completion of work activity
- meet written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures associated with equipment operations
- arrange work activities to meet all task requirements
Knowledge Evidence
The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes:
- Key policies and procedures, legislation and established requirements for backhoe/loader operations, including those relating to:
- machine isolation requirements
- responding appropriately to accidents and emergencies
- work health and safety, including signs of operator fatigue and management
- handover requirements
- basic equipment faults
- housekeeping activities including disposal of waste
- machine guidance systems
- Key factors affecting work activities described in performance evidence above, including:
- equipment technical capability and limitations
- ground conditions impacting machine operations
- determining safe working loads of the machine with specific work tasks
- safe work instructions for sloping and benching
- Key features associated with civil construction works, including:
- basic principles of material technology and compaction
- basic earthworks calculations
- civil construction activity sequences
- Assessment Conditions
- Mandatory conditions for assessment of this unit are stipulated below. The assessment must:
include access to:
- backhoe/loader

- be conducted in a safe environment; and,
- be assessed in context of this sector’s work environment; and,
- be assessed in compliance with relevant legislation/regulation and using policies, procedures, processes and operational manuals directly related to the industry sector for which it is being assessed; and,
- confirm consistent performance can be applied in a range of relevant workplace circumstances
- Where personal safety or environmental damage are limiting factors, assessment may occur in a simulated work environment* provided it is realistic and sufficiently rigorous to cover all aspects of this sector’s workplace performance, including environment, task skills, task management skills, contingency management skills and job role environment skills.
- Guidance on simulated environments has been stipulated in the relevant RII Companion Volume Implementation Guide (CVIG).
Assessor requirements
- Assessors of this unit must satisfy the assessor requirements in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.

- An industry expert engaged by an RTO to wholly or partially conduct assessment, independently or together with another assessor, or be involved in an assessment judgement, must also satisfy the assessor requirements in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.
The industry expert must additionally:
- demonstrate current industry skills directly relevant to the training and assessment being provided
- hold the unit being assessed (or an equivalent unit), and
- have the following minimum years of current work experience:
